My Story

When I was four years old, I fell in love.

That is a bit young, perhaps, to be making such a deep, life-long commitment, but what can I say? A dream and a joy had taken root and I would never let it go.

I will always be thankful that my grandmother chose to pass along her piano to our family. I still remember, in vivid color, sitting on the wooden bench with feet swinging above the floor, reaching out my fingers and testing the feel and the sounds, then stretching awkwardly, bending down with one foot to reach the pedals. I remember opening the back of the instrument and marveling at the gorgeously intricate wood and brass mechanical structures, observing the synchronized movements, and delighting in the cause and effects, science and art on display, working in perfect harmony.

The piano is a beautiful, multifaceted thing. It is an incredibly flexible path to self-expression, a way to challenge yourself to new heights, explore the articulations of composers from both long ago and those creating new sounds today, or to enjoy the comfort of an old, favorite melody. For me, it has also been a safe haven, a beneficial way to express feeling or to lose myself for a little while in beautiful song while my mind processes the many thoughts or stresses of the day. It is also often a way that I express worship, or that I am able to bless others.

The piano is an excellent choice for young students as their first instrument, or for students of any age who wish to begin or restart their musical journeys. The complexities of musical theory are beautifully laid out in logical sequence when presented using the piano, and those same principles can then be applied across the board to make learning and appreciating other instruments a richer and more accessible experience.

I would love to discuss the next steps for your own adventure in music. Contact me today for more info!

Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent.
